The Evolution of Samsung Galaxy S

The Evolution of Samsung Galaxy S

Ola every one with another article. My previous main article  was on the evolution of Apples iPhone so this time i decided to talk about the biggest rival of iPhone in market Samsung Galaxy S. There are a lot of phones in the S series, but i am going to talk about thee main models for which thee series is known like S, S II, S III etc. So lets start with a little intro.

Introduction:
Suwon, South Korea
Samsung is a multinational electronics company which is based in Suwon, South Korea. Samsung is mainly mobile producer from which its Galaxy series is most famous. Samsung is the only company that go head to head with Apple in the global market
It was founded as Samsung Electric Industries, about 47 years ago in 1969 later in 1988 it became Samsung Electronic. Samsung is mainly known for its smartphones ant TV's but it also produce Semiconductors, Digital cameras, Camcorders, Different types of Refrigerators, LCD and LED panels, Various components of Computers etc. So in short Samsung is famous for its work in smartphones but it offers its products and services for whole electronic market. Lets move ahead with its first smartphone in Samsung flagship Series Galaxy S.

Samsung Galaxy S:
Galaxy S 1
The first phone said to be in this smartphone series Galaxy S, don't be confused with series name and this model name. Actually in real this series became famous with this smartphone, it is kinda trend setter for Samsung. Its model name is i9000. Some people also call this phone as Galaxy S1.
As you can see in the picture on the right it is touch screen phone, which supported a vast range of supported networks included GSM/GPRS/EDGE, EV-DO, WiMax, HSDPA, HSUPA etc. This phone was not a big hit in starting but it took a bit time to be a great success. It was first released on 4th of June 2010 and as of January 2013 total of 24 million units were sold. So it is not a small no but it took a time to become that number. This smartphone based on Android. Its not the first phone which is based on Android but it is the hit phone which was based on Android. It had 1 GHz of processor and 200 MHz of GPU. Not like iPhone it supported Memory card. It was decent smartphone compared to its price, specs, and availability.

Galaxy S II:
The successor of S1 or S, code named i9100 or Galaxy S II was released on May 2, 2011. Its slogan was "Vivid Fast Slim". It is also based on Android's version 2.3 "Gingerbread" later it was upgraded to Android 4.1.2 "Jelly Bean". Some people who are still using this phone are upgrading its OS to the Android's latest version Android 7.1 "Nougat" via unofficial ROM's. But in my point of view if you are upgrading smartphone's OS like S2 to Android's Nougat you are overdoing it, you are doing wrong to the phone Its 2017 now, Upgrade your phone its been more than 6 years since S II has been released.
Galaxy S II
In my point of view all the smartphones having full touch capability are inspired by Apple's iPhone. Because Apple is kinda first to launch full touch supported smartphone. But Samsung did very well in competing with Apple's iPhone. Just like its predecessor it supported a vast range of different networks. Samsung did very well this smartphone. According to Samsung, it received 3 million pre-orders globally. Well, that's a very good number for pre-orders. So what about the total sales, well according to the marketing stats Samsung globally sold over 40.2 million units as of starting of 2013. Its different variants had different chips by different vendors, but generally it had 1.2 GHz of dual core processor, and 1 GB of memory. The battery which was given with its package was a decent battery having 1650 mAh capacity, but its user replaceable battery had the capacity of 1800 mAh but performance wise user replaceable battery was far better than battery that comes with the package. User replaceable battery gave the timing of 10 hours under heavy usage. Another interesting feature of this mobile connectivity is that it came with USB OTG (On the Go) support, it also had the HDMI (High definition Multimedia Interface) support. Its camera having 8 Mega Pixels and different features did a very decent job. I think that's enough praising this model lets move ahead to its successor which was released after 1 year of this smartphone.

Galaxy S III:
As i said earlier, the successor of Galaxy S II, Galaxy S III was released almost after  one year release of S II on 29 May, 2012. Well this was the first Galaxy series phone i have used personally for a short period of time, and i liked it very much. I was very excited when i first got my hands on this beautiful piece of tech by Samsung Electronic called Galaxy S III. Its code name was "572489579",  pretty odd code named compared to its predecessor's and competitors code names. I like its slogan very much which was "Designed by Humans, Inspired by Nature". I see this smartphone in peoples hand even today in very good condition.
Galaxy S III
Samsung was picking much pace compared to its competitors in global market except Apple. Many companies were trying to compete with Apple to very extent, But Samsung was the only one who was going head to head with Apple in global market in my point of view it was the only one. Samsung was also offering pretty much freedom compared to Apple, that you can transfer data to other devices using Bluetooth technology, you don't have to Jailbreak you phone to access full features or to void you warranty issued by the vendor.
Samsung also offers more RAM, Processor, and Mega Pixels in Camera. In this model Samsung offers 1.5 GB of memory, with 1.5 GHz of Quad core processor. Some of its variants had 2 GB of memory and had dual core processor except of Quad core processor. So what about it sales? Well according to Samsung, it had received 9 million orders before release, And as of 2015 according to market stats total of 70 million units were sold worldwide. Well that's a very good no which spoke of this smartphone success very loudly.

Galaxy S IV:
Galaxy S 4
Another smartphone powered by Android, the successor of  Galaxy S III was released  in April 2013. Its was released with the slogan of "Life Companion". With not just upgraded hardware, but Samsung also focused on software functionality to improve device performance like eye ball tracking, and finger tracking when it hovers over the screen. It has a vast list of compatible networks. It originally came with Android 4.4.2 "Jelly Bean" but it was later up-gradable to Android 5.0.1 "Lollipop". Samsung this time introduces some new features like Air view, Air gesture, Smart pause, Smart rotation, Smart scroll, Smart scroll, Temperature sensor etc. Some features called these new features "innovation", Samsung also faced criticism due to these features as some called them "feature creep" or just "gimmicks".
S IV
Samsung hooked this device with two processors, the first processor have the clock frequency of 1.6 GHz having quad core and the second processor was also quad core which have the clock frequency of 1.2 GHz. Some of this deice variants had only single processor having quad core. It had 2GB LPDDR3 of memory. It have a very decent GPU compared to that time when it was released. It supported up to 200 GB of removable storage or microSd card. There is a list of connectivity tech which are included in this device, some of these are Bluetooth 4.0, WiFi, WiFi direct, NFC, OTG, ANT +, Infrared, HDMI etc. It have a removable battery of 2600 mAh capacity with a wireless charging option. Rear Camera was very nice with the 13 Mega Pixels and front camera was just OK with 2 Mega Pixels. Now lets come to the sales, It became Samsung's fastest selling smartphone, with 20 million units sold in first two months and 60 million units in first six months.

Galaxy S 5:
Galaxy S5
Now this is my favorite smartphone by Samsung, i used this phone for a very long period of time. And i liked it very much, its camera result, performance while gaming, pretty decent battery timing, with some enhanced features from its predecessor, i like everything about this phone.
This beautiful device was released on April 11, 2014 with the slogan of "My life empowered by Samsung galaxy S5". Not a pretty attractive slogan, i didn't liked its slogan. But i loved the device very much. The slogan of S4 was very much attractive. It came with the Android 4.4 "KitKat" but it was upgradable to Android 6.0.1 "Marshmallow". Its non LTE version were empowered by Samsung Exynos 5 Octa 522 but its LTE version was empowered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 801. Its LTE version had the GPU of ARM Mali T628MP6 and LTE versions had the Adreno 330 GPU.
Galaxy S V
This models has the screen of 5.1 inch 1080p AMOLED panel, it was slightly bigger than S4. The S5 is IP67 certified for water and dust resistance. The phone is able to survive 30 minutes in water up to 1 meter. Its rear camera has 16 Mega Pixel, with Samsung's ISOCELL technology, which isolates the individual pixels inside the sensor to improve its ability to capture light and reduce crosstalk.
The devices supplied by Verizon Wireless faced a serious bug which caused the device camera to cease operation permanently, and displayed a "Camera failed" error on screen, whenever user tried to use the camera. Both Verizon and Samsung confirmed that the bug has the affected the device in limited no of devices. Samsung replaced the devices which faced this bug under the device's warranty. Over 10 million units were shipped in 25 days, which make it the fastest shipping smartphone in history. Samsung sales were very good in starting, and as i said it became the fastest shipping in the early days of its release but if we compare the sales of first three months of both mobiles S4 and S5, S5 was not as successful as its predecessor. But it doesn't mean that it failed completely in the market, it did pretty much decent in the market. And it was a very good smartphone.

Galaxy S6 and S6 edge:
Galaxy S6, S6 Edge , the successor of S5, were revealed in the first "Samsung Unpacked 2015" at the "World Mobile Congress" on 1 March, 2015. The S6 Edge+ was revealed with Samsung's Note 5 in the second "Samsung Unpacked 2015" in August the same year.
Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge
Its code name was "Project Zero", kinda cool name right. The devices were cool too, especially models with that beautiful edge, curved edge. Its slogan was "Next is Now". S6 and S6 Edge came with the Android 5.0.2 "Lollipop" and S6 Edge + came with Android 5.1.1 "Lollipop" currently upgraded to Android 6.0.1 "Marshmallow".
Its processor is Octa Core with 64-bit architecture that is made with 14nm technology. Its first processor is Quad Core clocked at 2.1 GHz Cortex A57 and the second processor is Quad Core clocked at 1.5 GHz Cortex A53. These all three models had the same GPU which is Mali-T760 MP8. There is the difference of 1 GB of RAM in S6, S6 Edge and S6 Edge +. S6 and S6 Edge have the 3GB of LPDDR4 memory. But S6 Edge plus not only have the advantage of size only but it also have the 4GB of LPDDR4 memory. So whats with this edge? Actually it is the Edge, that the smartphone has that curved screen on the one side of the screen.
Users in start has some issues in handling or using the device because of its curved screen. But with time they get used to it. In November 2015, Google's Project Zero publicized eleven "high-impact" security vulnerabilities in Samsung's distribution of Android S6. It was also criticized, few criticized it for few reasons and other for other reasons like for its design, price etc.
Samsung sold over 6 million units of Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge, it was successful in exceeding the sales of S5 in same frame time but it failed to exceed the sales of Galaxy S4.

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge:
The latest edition in the series, Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge were released on March 11, 2016. These both phones were first unveiled in "World Mobile Congress" on 21 February 2016 by President of Samsung's Global Communication "DJ Koh".
DJ Koh
Although i was not able to attend this conference but i watch this whole presentation by Samsung LIVE on YouTube.
The presentation or press release whatever you say it, it went very well, both models were presented in the conference with some new features like always ON screen function, and few new gadgets were also introduced like VR and Camera 360 to record 360 degree videos. Founder of Social Networking site Facebook "Mark Zuckerberg" was also present at the presentation and he described about the 360 degree video and work of Facebook on this tech in collaboration with Samsung.
Mark Zuckerberg and DJ Koh
Samsung released two models of the device, Exynos and Snapdragon version. Exynos model have Exynos 8890 (4x2.3 GHz Mongoose & 4x1.6 GHz Cortex-A53) Octa Core chip on system and it have the Adreno 530 GPU. The Snapdragon model have the Quad core (2x2.15 GHz Kryo & 2x1.6 GHz Kryo) Qualcomm Snapdragon and the Adreno 530 GPU.Exynos version of this device worked very better performance wise compared to Snapdragon version, i think that this time having more cores did the work.
Samsung unlike Apple giving more freedom to its users like using expandable storage slot to 256 GB and other features like OTG and Bluetooth. Its rear camera used the improved Samsung's ISOCELL technology, lens and CMOS provided by SONY. It have the 12 Mega Pixel capable of 4K video recording at 30 fps and 1080p at 60 fps. Its front camera was of 5 Mega Pixel and doing a fine job
Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge
The Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge received positive views from critics, Because Samsung brings back the microSd card support, and Water and Dust resistance.
At early stages it faced a problem of fps in video recording at 4K but it was pretty much sort out later. After its official launch in South Korea almost 100 thousand devices were sold and the sales are still going on til date.

I didn't mentioned the variants of these devices in detail because the variants are lot of them and that will take a whole book to write not an article. On Galaxy Note i will write another article in detail.
